Foundations

The start of any project requires a good foundation in order to establish a good strong build; from footings to drainage & site clearance, we deliver to a high standard. What lies beneath the ground is unknown, so when we create your quotation we take this into consideration and always prepare for the unexpected.

What are typical Ground Works required?

Groundwork encompasses the essential preparatory tasks undertaken to ready sub-surfaces for the initiation of a construction project. This crucial phase ensures the proper groundwork for the construction area. It involves initial excavations that lay the groundwork for subsequent foundation placement, a pivotal aspect that determines the structural integrity of the entire building or structure.

Beyond foundation preparation, groundwork extends to activities such as laying drains and cabling to facilitate the construction process. In some instances, it may involve installing utilities like water pipes, fiber optic cables, telephone lines, and gas pipes. Typically, groundworks serve as the initial construction stage, especially in the absence of demolition or prerequisite site enabling works. The various aspects of groundwork include:

  • Foundations
  • Trenching
  • Reinstatement
  • Substructure
  • Sewer construction
  • Basement construction
  • All drainage
  • Landscaping

Types of Foundations

Hammersley Contractors have experience laying a wide variety of foundations for residential and commercial purposes, including:

  • Individual Footing - Square or rectangular concrete pads appropriate for single columns.
  • Spread footing - Wider rectangular pads for free-standing columns, walls and bridge piers.
  • Pile Foundations - Deep foundations used to transfer heavy loads of structures through columns to hard soil strata which is much below ground level.
  • Combined Footing - When two columns are close enough that their base pads overlap.
  • Raft or Mat Foundations - Concrete and rebar spread across the entire area of the building to support heavy structural loads from columns and walls.
